What’s the least amount of time I can run my swimming pool?
I live in central Florida; temps here are about 90 degrees (highest) and about 75 degrees at night. What’s the least amount of time I can run my pool pump while keeping the water (generally) balanced?
Our pool store guy says “nothing less than 12 hours”, but I was wondering if we could curtail that to lower our electrical usage!

you could probably get away with 11 hours and 59 minutes, but nothing less. Every little bit of energy saved can help.
are you in it all the time during the day. if so you could have it off when your in it then turn it on when not ours runs from 10am-7pm and then 130am-5am our bill is around 140 but we are also in pa so its open for 3 months
Contact a few more pool manufacturers. They know their product. If they all say at least 12 hours, then that is what you should do.
i own a pool company and i would run your pool at lest 8 hours a day nothing less any time less and the filter can not clean the water good enough .in north central texas we are still running them ten hour a day because the sun is so intense.email me at jldailey 2000@yahoo.com if you have anymore questions p.s. i bet the pool store guy works at leslies, about half of them have never touched a pool i do pools every day for the last eleven years
It depends on the flow of your pump and the size of your pool you can check the flow rate of your pump online most pump manufacturers have an online pump flow chart….to figure out the gallonage of pool, check this page: http://www.swimming-pool-information.com/pool-size-formulas.html generally, you want to turn over the entire gallonage of pool daily in the hot months
During pool school, I was told to take the current average temperature outside and divide it by 10. So if it’s 90F out average, that’d be 9 hours. I’ve done that for over a year now and have had no issues with cleanliness or algae.
FPL recommended 4 hours a day. My pool is 12000 gallons and I don’t have a problem. I run it in the morning when the sun is not at the peak and it also saves on my pump. Try it and see what works for you.
